This order was founded in the twelfth century to provide nursing for lepers, and was named after Lazarus the leper, mentioned in the New Testament. The knights of the order were themselves lepers, and besides offering assistance to their fellow sufferers, they also carried out military duties. They founded a hospital for lepers near the northern wall of the city, near the modern New Gate. |
